P Boast & Son funeral furnishers of Chertsey was established in 1904 by Peter Boast, a local builder during the week and funeral director at the weekends. At the time, Peter was known locally as the ‘poor man’s undertaker’, as he provided a service for members of the community who couldn’t afford to take time off work for a weekday funeral.
In the early 50s Peter’s son Leonard Boast joined the firm, focusing the firm’s direction towards the funeral side of the business. Leonard was based at the long-standing family premises at 36 Eastworth Road where the business still runs to this day. The firm grew successfully over the years and provided a renowned local service to the community under Leonard’s instruction.
In 1963 Leonard’s son Peter Boast joined the family business straight from school, working closely with his father to learn the funeral business whilst also starting a mechanics garage from the same premises. As his father slowly released control over the years, Peter took over the family funeral business and years later encouraged his own son Matthew Boast to join the business, following in his own footsteps.
Matthew Boast joined the family business in 1987, like Peter starting straight from school, and was very much encouraged by his father to be an integral part of the firm. At just 19 years of age, Matthew was conducting funerals and helping to run the company.
10 years later Peter made the tough decision to sell the family business to G M Luff & Partners. Matthew decided to stay with his family’s business and is still the face of the local company today. Under new ownership and the experience and investment this has entailed, P Boast & Son has since gone from strength to strength.
As part of the Ford Mears group, P Boast & Son continues to provide a caring and professional service to the local community around Chertsey, Shepperton, Woking, Addleston, Weybridge and Ottershaw
Further investment in the business by Ford Mears has meant that P Boast & Son is now able to offer a wider range of services and vehicle options, whilst still providing a personalised service that honours the legacy of P Boast & Son’s independent, family-run business.
